Student Guide – How to enjoy university and save money! So you are a student and although you have what seems like a never-ending student grant it makes sense to get the most from your money so that you have more for socialising and shopping. You don’t even need to find the cheapest can of beans or start drinking white lightening to start saving cash, all it takes is a little effort and you could already be saving yourself money. Here is our Top Money Saving Tips: 1. If you are renting a flat and still have to pay bills make sure that you don’t leave your heating on all day if no one is home, ask your landlord to set the timer so it just comes on when you need it. 2. Turn off the lights and any electrical appliance which has a standby setting when you are out of the house and try to use energy saving light bulbs if possible. 3. Most heat escapes through the windows and under the doors, close the curtains to stop heat from escaping and keep the warmth in. 4. If you are not making a cup of tea for everyone then only fill your kettle to the level required. 5. When washing clothes you will use less electricity and water if you wash everything at 30°, make sure you fill the washing machine rather than doing several small washes throughout the week. 6. The great think about being a student apart from freshers’ week and partying is that you are exempt from Council Tax if you are a full time student. Make sure that you let the local Council know in advance to avoid any charges. 7. At some point during your student term you will own a Big Screen TV, make sure purchase a TV License to avoid any fines. 8. If you are living with other students then try to do all your shopping together to save money by buying in bulk this will save you all money in the long run, also many supermarkets now have online shopping websites – sign up to the email newsletters for discounts and free delivery. 9. Not only can you save money by taking advantage of seasonal sales you also have student discounts in High Street shops – just show your student card. 10. If you shop online regularly try using a cashback website for all your online shopping , this will save you money in the long run as you will be rewarded with cashback and discounts on every order you place online. There are hundreds of high street shops online and you can even make money by referring friends to the website. Written by Shophelper www.shophelper.co.uk
